cat·a·clysm ('kat-a-"kli-z&m)
- noun, Etymology: French cataclysme, from Latin cataclysmos,
from Greek kataklysmos, from kataklyzein to inundate, from
kata- + klyzein to wash
Date: 1637
1 : FLOOD, DELUGE
2 : CATASTROPHE
3 : a momentous and violent event marked by overwhelming upheaval and
demolition; broadly : an event that brings great changes
source: Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
Cataglory Definition: 1: As humankind struggled for more precise
definitions for the many verbal sounds (words) they began using to enhance
communications, they frequently forgot the original root meanings. Clearly, this
word was coined to describe the phenomena of being inundated with cats whose
daily washing behavior was at odds with what was then common "human" sense.
Time allowed the active verb reference, to be inundated and washed, for
this event to become simply a noun denoting the event itself. Note: Humankind
has since adopted frequent bathing and personal hygiene as a normal social
behavior. 2: any great upheaval in a cat's life.

cat-o'-nine-tails ( 'kat-o-'nIn-"tAlz)
- noun, Inflected Form(s): plural cat-o'-nine-tails
Etymology: from the resemblance of its scars to the scratches of a cat
Date: 1665
1 : a whip made of usually nine knotted lines or cords fastened to a
handle
source: Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
Cataglory Definition: Need we say more? Although the reference
to nine is clearly inaccurate. Cats have 10 sharp nails per pair of claws.
It's possible that this reference came about before the common use of the number
zero as a place holder.
